Doctor Visit – Quick Tips

PREPARE FOR YOUR VISIT IN ADVANCE

  • You may think you will remember everything you’re experiencing, but it’s easy to forget important details once you are face to face with your doctor.  It is helpful to have a symptom diary to keep track of the exact time and how frequently you notice symptoms.

EXPLAIN HOW YOU ARE FEELING

  • You know how you feel better than anyone else.  It helps the doctor tremendously when  you’re open about how you feel.  Anything that you are experiencing in your life (stress, lack of sleep, loss of appetite, etc.) can have a major effect on your overall health.  Don’t leave anything out.

KNOW WHAT MEDICINES YOU ARE TAKING

  • Are you taking any prescription medication?  If so, let your doctor know the name of the drug, the dosage, and the amount of times you take them each day.  If you have an allergy to any medications, be sure to tell your doctor.

DON’T BE EMBARRASSED – YOUR DOCTOR HAS HEARD IT ALL

  • While it may be difficult to share your medical issue with your physician, keep in mind that it won’t be the first time he or she has heard what you are describing.  Also, your visit with your doctor is completely confidential.  Rest assured knowing that!

KEEP AN OPEN MIND

  • Patients that come in with their minds made up about how they will be treated are often the most difficult to treat.  You may have an idea of the type of treatment you want, but be open to the doctor’s suggestions.  For example: You may have bad headaches and think you need an MRI, but the doctor may suggest medication to try first and tests to order in the future.
